CREATING SOLUTIONS TOGETHER
WHY THE LIVING LAB IN GERMANY?
When complex challenges are faced in a real-life context, it becomes very difficult for a single actor to find the right solution. By collaborating and co-creating solutions with end-users and with a multidisciplinary team of experts, complexity and uncertainty are reduced and the possibility of finding a sustainable solution increases. Research shows that Living Labs – based on the exchange of information among experts and collaboration among different actors – lead to expansive innovation and tend to reach advanced and original solutions (Leminen, 2013).
Living Labs (LLs) are structured in a way that dynamically supports the detections, analysis, and codification of potential solutions.
Create participatory environments, facilitating the exchange of views and proactive interaction among experts in different areas.
Promote the exchange of views for a peer-to-peer learning approach.
Share experiences through the study and analysis of real cases, in order to address potential solutions and, above all, to understand whether, and in what form, the threat is changed in the virtual world
Create a multidisciplinary team of experts in the field of security and counter violent extremism, magistrates, prosecutors, lawyers, law enforcement agents, journalists, NGOs specialising in participatory security, as well as academics and researchers, members of the EU networks (EJN, RAN, CEP, ERA, etc.).
PHASE 1
A national contact point is selected for the management and the implementation of the single Living Lab in the hosting country.
PHASE 2
Experts will be selected and invited. The team must be multidisciplinary (legal, security, academic, private tech companies, NGOs active in the specific field), so that the cases and the topics can be analysed from different angles. Each expert is given access to the landing page for the specific Living Lab.
PHASE 3
The national contact points will organise a 1 or 2-day living lab, in which all topics will be discussed.
PHASE 4
Each living lab will be introduced by an initial short technical document, illustrating exemplary cases and key topics.
PHASE 5
A report will be composed by the responsable partner, illustrating all elements emerging from the comparative study of the activity. The report will include results, conclusions and recommendations as output of the activity.
PROPHETS
Within the EU-funded project PROPHETS (Preventing Radicalisation Online through the Proliferation of Harmonised Toolkits), the Italian Ministry of Justice in cooperation with Fondazione Agenfor International and the EU PROPHETS consortium, launched a research activity based on the Living Lab approach.
PROPHETS is an EU-funded project that researches how individuals become radicalized and what kind of technology and tools may help to reduce cybercrime activities. The main goal is to prevent serious crimes by building resilience in people and society.
In this context technologies plays a central role. How they may be used to commit and counter crimes will be
the main focus of the Living Lab in Germany.
